Hah!

Well, I'm teaching in Costa Rica this summer... not quite South America, but I'm heading in the right direction.

Have you been there before?

Nope, not yet, but I'll be teaching on the edge of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve for six weeks (also includes a weekend in San Jose, 4-5 days on the Caribbean coast at Puerto Viejo, & two days at Arenal).

Good to meet you in New York the other weekend, by the way.

It was good to meet you as well....

I used to go to Costa Rica a couple of times a year between '83 and '86, and 90-91. Back before the big tourist increase but I've heard it's still wonderful.

I never made it to Arenal but we went to Poas near San Jose a couple of times.

We used to do a week on each coast, and we'd always go to Cahuita which is just up the coast from Puerto Viejo. Cahuita had two hotels back then.

The beaches are amazing. If you can find a beach that's not near town lights at night and there's no moon the phosporescence in breaking waves looks like a flourescent tube lighting up.

I remember there were a lot of howler monkeys there, you'd never see them but the sounded like jets taking off. And at Cahuita all the parrots would come down to the beach at sunset. Hundreds and hundreds of them. Just amazing.

The caribbean coast used to be hard to get to from San Jose - there was no road, just a 11-hour (?) train ride. So the culture was much more black caribbean than spanish. Probably still is. Lots of reggae music, very slow moving, and a sweet smoke odor in the air :)

We may be going to Poas as well, not sure. I need a volcano icon, apparently.

The senior prof on this program is an Afro-Caribbean literature specialist, hence the side trip to Puerto Viejo. I can't wait to see all the wildlife in the cloud forest. I may also be the prof who leads students on a rafting trip in the Rio Picuare.

Still debating whether I have the time/money to do a couple days after we're officially done down on the Pacific Coast at Quepos.
