When do you give up?

When to you actually give up? Some time it feels like nothing goes your way. Currently it is my Wonderful van. I love my van it is the roomiest and most convient vehicle I have ever drove. My Van is a 1987 Mitsubishi. Also known as the toaster on wheels. The begining of the end started about 9 months ago. It was having problems when it was cold. very very slow to shift from 1st to 2nd. Once it warms up (about 20 min) it drives like a dream. I took it to a machanic that was recommended, and he put in an addative and what was suppoed to help. Well, it didn't. Then he said it was having slippige problems and suggested a rebuilt replacement. I trusted the guy. becuse he had done some other stuff on the van, I said OK. Well, $1600 and 5 months later it is doing the same thing. I take it back and he says OK (it's under warrenty). 1 week, 2 weeks, by the 3rd week. I want my van back. It has been taken to another transmission shop, differnet than the one who did the rebuilt one (they are out of business). This new shop says that there is a leak in the vaulve seal and that it needs a new torque converter. So $800 and a month later it is still doing the same thing. I am back where I started and no hope in site. I guess it is my fault for having a unique older vehicle. I can keep thowing money at it and hope that something fixes it, or I can give up and get another vehicle that I won't be happy with and a car payment that I cannot afford.
