The original is an image that gryphons_hole had done a year or so ago and I just fell in love with it. So, Gryphon told me that it would be OK if I were to use it for a tattoo. Dan started with a basic outline and trace and he got to work. Dan's girlfriend, Mary, had just given him one of here old massage tables, so he was looking forward to trying it out on a client. I guess that would be me.
This the forth tat that I have gotten from Dan over the 10 years that I have know him. I know a bit about the actual working of tattooing but I asked Dan about needles. He said that he like a 9 and that he would be using a 9 and a 14 for most of the lines. He had a color "fill" needle and a 5 for the fine hair on the image. Dan gave me a loupe and let me see the needles, very cool! By the end of the day Dan would have 5 different guns out for my finished ink. I love Dan's work and I like the way he works. I usually walk in with an idea and an open mind. Dan is an artist and he know what will work had his own idea of what he wants. You have to trust your artist!
Dan actually started tattooing my leg at about noon. after about an hour and a half the outlining and boots were practically done. We took a break at that point, I need so coffee and Dan was itching for a cig. After about 15 min we were back at it. First the pants, a grey to go with the shirt which was thinking of a light-medium blue. That was too about another hour or so. Getting to be lunch time. We stopped for lunch. Catfish strips and french fries. By this time the jello had worn off and the coffee had thinned my blood enough that it was dripping down my leg. It seemed like a lot of blood but I guess it was not really that much. I got Dan's daughter, Morgan to take a few pictures, and went back to work. Skin-tone, wood tone, and highlights were next on the list. At 16:00 Dan's next appointment showed up. He had was not sure about the time when he scheduled her, so he told Angie to have here reschedule or come back a few hours later. He said that he was not going to stop in the middle, he was having too much fun with this image. Orange for the beard and moustache. Brown to line the hair. It was 17:30 by the time that I climbed off the table. Dan wrapped up my leg, I gave him a big hug and limped out of the shop.
I'm wiped. I need to take a nap. I just spent 6 hours lying on my side and I am dead tired. I can't wait to show gryphons_hole Dan's work after all the swelling has gone down and the hair on my leg has grown back. 2 weeks and I'm off to KC for Gryphon's open studio.
