I ♥ my Smartie

On Halloween day the Wichita SmartCar group did a rally to Ponca City, OK. The trip was only about 144 miles round trip. We met at the Lowe's parking lot in Derby and then headed to Oklahoma via Winfield, KS.

Mine is the one on the end with the green hood. We had hopped it would be a larger group, but alas, there were only 8 cars. This was the first trip I had been on with this group and it was nice to have lunch with some really nice people.

Got a great shot of me in the middle. There were 5 cars ahead of me and 2 behind.

So tell me - how is the Smart Car? Is it more a town commuting car, or can you use it reliably for interstate/highway driving? I see them around Dallas on occasion, but I can not fathom a 30 mile one-way highway commute in one of these every day...

Well, I absolutely love my SmartCar. I personally have no fear at all of driving it on the interstate. Since it has a higher profile, I don't worry about not being see (unlike a Mini Cooper). I just got back from a 2000 mi road trip to WI, IL and MI and I was rather comfortable on the ride. The cab is roomy and seats are firm yet, the car drives like a sports car. I usually cruise at 75-80 mph and the one thing that I wish it had was cruise control. As for the commute, I am rather spoiled, I cannot imagine a 60 mi RT everyday in any type of car. The only time I ever had to commute more than 5 miles in the past 25 years was when I studied in Japan and there I rode the train.

60 mile RT commute = welcome to Dallas. I know some people who commute 60 miles ONE WAY.

I was wondering about the Smart Car for longer trips. I have a Nissan Versa which is not half bad since it averages 30 MPG for me between fill ups here for my regular driving. I have taken it on a couple of long (2000-5000 mile trips) and it gets much better. Up in the Rockies this summer I averaged no less than 36 MPG between fill ups.

What is your fuel economy like in the city vs. your longer road trips?

And when will you do a road trip a few hours south to Dallas, handsome??

As for mpg, I am rather a lead-foot, so, my mileage sucks (and not in a good way) I only get about 35-37 mpg city. Highway is a little better closer to 40 mpg. There are others in the SmartCar group that get better than 45 mpg city/highway.

As for a road trip south, I have not been south of OKC since TBRU 3 years ago. I was thinking about this coming year's TBRU.... would love to meet an LJer or two *wink wink*

Oh that would definitely. For that matter, I have never been north of OKC on 35 either...

That is was I gathered from a few of sultmhoor's posts. It is too bad but, Detroit is a such a company town. When I was just in Brighton, MI my Father HAD to introduce me to a GM engineer friend of his, and he just had to go on and on about how bad the SmartCars are and how he would NEVER NEVER even think of owning one. And how he would never feel safe in anything other that an SUV blah blah blah....

Well people are crazy loyal to what is left of the big three here. With the exception of two of my cars I have always had smaller cars. The only reservation I ever had about the SmartCar is how it is in snow. I have never seen a paint design like yours. Is it custom?

When I first test drove a SmartCar it was snowing, although there was no accumulation. I have yet to drive in "in the snow". The color is a vinyl sheeting that is just adhered to the car.

Too cool! i still have a $99 deposit on one that i put down when they were first bringing them to the states. i cant afford a new car, though...i guess i should ask for my money back.

Dammit. I've been lusting for one of these for a while now. I do hope they're as good as I hear they are. My guys have concerns with 'safety' issues with the car; utterly fragile in a wreck, too light, blah blah. What do you think? How 'safe' is it? It seems great for driving on a good day, but what about rain or snow?

I first saw these cars in Paris France, they are made in France and are all over the city. I fell in love with their cuteness the second i saw them and had to order one as soon as they were available here in the USA. Love It, It looks like it is my black Trucks baby, hehehe
